Q: Are dental hygienists allowed to work without a dentist?
A: Yes! And you have the right to choose who cleans your teeth and where it is done! In 2007 Bill 171 was passed, which gives self-initiated dental hygienists the opportunity to work independently, without the supervision of a dentist. This was an important change to reflect the need of increased access of care to residents in the province.
Q: Do I still need to see a dentist?
A: At Shimmering Smiles Dental Hygiene our focus is prevention, not repair, so we still recommend that you see a dentist annually for x-rays and any dental repairs you may need (such as fillings). Thorough assessments are completed at each of your appointments and if any concerns are observed, they will be discussed with you and the appropriate referral will be given. Collaboration and working with other health professionals is an important aspect of meeting optimal oral and overall health!
Q: Do you direct bill?
A: Yes, we do direct bill to your insurance company. Those who insurance is confirmed will have the ability to use their coverage immediately at their appointment. To help save you from paying out of pocket and waiting for a reimbursement cheque, please make sure to provide your primary and secondary (if applicable) insurance plan number and breakdown. If you need help looking into your coverage, please don't hesitate to ask, we would be more than happy to assist you!
Q: How are you keeping me and my family safe from covid- 19 during an appointment?
A: At Shimmering Smiles Dental Hygiene the health and safety of our staff and clients is of the utmost importance. We have implemented many health and safety protocols to ensure safety remains our top priority. Here are of the following safety measures we are taking; client/visitor Covid screening, daily staff Covid screening, appropriate fallow time between patients to allow any aerosols to settle and appropriate PPE is always worn during your appointment. By doing our part, we can help keep everyone safe!
Q: Do you take x-rays?
A: No, at this time in Ontario, hygienists cannot prescribe or diagnose radiographs, so we cannot offer this service. However, if you are in need of dental x-rays, we can help refer you to a dentist to provide you with that service. We also appreciate having your most recent radiographs forwarded to us to have on file to help properly assess the health of your mouth!
